Shannon Alexander

Art has been a part of Shannon’s life since she was a young child. Growing up with a family full of artists, creativity radiated from her naturally. Shannon graduated from SCAD (Savannah, GA) with a BFA in Photography in 2011 and dove deep into the digital media world. After a 5+ year hiatus from her easel and yearning for a new creative challenge, along with her love for the celestial realm, SpaceArt was born in 2017.

Starting with a black canvas, Shannon first adds soft layers of airbrush paint to lay the groundwork for each piece. From there, she meticulously adds layer upon layer of oil paint to help form the dramatic details of the interstellar clouds, dust and gases found lightyears away.

In my visual research, I am motivated by the life pulsating in the undercarriage of our environment. On the surface of  the painting, it is the footprint of mankind. It serves as a fossil of a species of life that burnt itself out and left behind a  trail of detritus from man’s bad stewardship. The underlayers of the painting serve as the dwelling of the life that  survived mankind. It mutated and healed itself as it was pushed down deeper into the surface of the Earth but still  fought to emerge from the surface. Formally, these pieces are both spatial and topographical cross sections of space.

I begin each piece by writing the narrative of the piece on a panel. This serves as a spiritual cleansing while making the  piece about the narrative. Next, I bury the narrative wire and fabric structures. After I create the landmarks, I layer them  with media modifying the painting both above and below the surface.

Writing fills in the gaps. You can’t forget a recording but you can forget the absurd. If I don’t make sense at the first viewing, rinse and repeat. My practice navigates storytelling using vignette memories as the reality. I make short duration fast cut video art navigating my own coming of age narrative, often described as psychedelic character-space explorations. I combine a variety of alternative processes because there’s many ways of  doing the same thing during fast cut video art.

Huchen Courouleau

Huchen's paintings range from landscape to cityscape. He expresses his art in various media such as oils, acrylic and watercolor. He tends to let media dictate where it goes instead of forcing it to a certain way, in that it shows the essence or strength of the medium.

Whether independently or simultaneously, sensations are experienced both visually and physically. When I encounter a decaying  pinecone, I instantly see the shapes interacting that form its structure, then I proceed to engage with it physically by picking it  up and holding onto it. While experiencing the different movements of the body while sleeping, a desire emerges to conduct  a visual investigation of this physical sensation. Whether it is through drawings on paper, video installation, or performance, my  work persistently attempts to engage the isolation and interaction of these sensations.

“The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inner significance.” -Aristotle
